Blog Title: How Did Prayer Begin in the Bible? Lessons from Enosh, Abel, and Abraham | Genesis 4:26
Shalom, dear friends. One question we often hear is: Who was the first person to pray to God the Father in the Bible?
Let’s find the answer from the Word.
1. The First Sign of Prayer: In the Time of Enosh
Genesis 4:26 says, "Then men began to call on the name of the LORD."
This happened in the days of Enosh, the son of Seth. The name "Enosh" means "mortal" or "frail man." After Abel's death and as sin increased, people realized they needed God more than their own strength.
To be clear: The Bible does not tell us the exact words Enosh prayed. It simply tells us that in his time, people began to call upon the name of the Lord. That is why we can rightly consider this as the first beginning of prayer.
2. Abel and Cain: Coming Before God
In Genesis 4, both Abel and Cain brought offerings to God. Hebrews 11:4 says, "By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did." God accepted him because of his faith.
The root of prayer is the same: to come before God and trust in Him.
3. Abraham: The First Recorded Prayer in Words
The first person whose prayer is recorded in clear words in the Bible is Abraham.
Wherever he pitched his tent, he built an altar and called on the name of the LORD (Genesis 12:8; 13:4).
When God made a promise to him, he spoke his heart directly: "Sovereign LORD, what can you give me?" (Genesis 15:2).
His intercession for Sodom (Genesis 18:22-33) is one of the deepest prayers in the Bible. He asked again and again, if there are righteous people in the city, will you spare it?
God brought healing to Abimelech and his household through Abraham's prayer (Genesis 20:17).
3 Lessons for Us Today
1. Call on the Name of God. This is where it all started, from the time of Enosh.
2. Speak Your Heart Directly. Abraham brought his questions, complaints, and requests - everything before God.
3. Intercede for Others. Abraham prayed for Sodom and for Abimelech.
For Your Family
From today, set a fixed time for your family to come together and call upon the name of God, whether in the morning or at night.
A Prayer: "Father, as people began to call upon You in the time of Enosh, give us also a heart to call upon You every day. Amen."
Declaration: God hears our cry.
Today's Task: Today, be still for one minute with your family and pray, calling upon the name of God.
