The Primary Function of a Modern-Day Priest
The OT priest had three core functions:
-
Offer animal sacrifice for atonement. (2 Chron. 7:12; Exo. 23:42) The priest brought the sacrifice before the Lord so that sin could be covered and the people could draw near to God (Leviticus 1:4).
-
Offer incense and intercede for the nations. (Exo. 30:6,7; Psalm 141:2) Aaron was to burn fragrant incense on the altar every morning and evening, a continual offering before the Lord.
-
Keep, seek and share the knowledge of God. (Mal. 2:7) "For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts."
The NT priest has the following functions:
-
Offer lost souls as living sacrifice. (James 5:20; Rom. 15:16) Paul speaks of his ministry as a priestly service to the Gentiles, "that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit." Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way saves a soul from death.
-
Offer intercessory prayers. (1 Tim. 2:1-4, 8; Rev. 8:3,4) Paul urges that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people. John sees an angel offering incense with the prayers of all the saints before the throne.
-
Keep, seek and share knowledge of God. (Col. 1:10; Acts 17:11; 1 Tim. 4:13) Believers are called to grow in the knowledge of God's will and to walk worthy of the Lord. The Bereans "received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily," and Paul instructs Timothy to devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching.
Every priestly function finds its perfect fulfillment in Jesus Christ, our great High Priest:
-
He became the full and final sacrifice for our atonement. (Heb. 10:10) "By the will of God we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." No other sacrifice is needed.
-
He is interceding for us right now. (Heb. 7:25) "He always lives to make intercession for them." Our prayers rise to the Father because our Priest stands before Him.
-
In whom are to be found all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Col. 2:3) Everything we need to know God comes through Him.
Our calling is not to build a system of ceremonies around a single office, but to live as priests before God. We offer ourselves and those who are far from God, we pray for the nations and for those in authority, and we seek and share the knowledge of God with others. The church is strongest when every believer carries out this priestly service, and when the work of making disciples, not the building of structures, stays at the center.
Prayer
Let us close in prayer.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus, our great High Priest, who offered Himself once for all and who lives forever to intercede for us. Thank You for making us a royal priesthood. Give us hearts that offer ourselves in Your service, lips that pray for the nations, and minds that seek and share the knowledge of You. Help us to bring lost souls to Your Son, and let our names be written in the Book of Life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Shalom,
