How To Pray? - A Simple Biblical Step-By-Step Guide For Beginners - Lord's Prayer Method Matthew 6:9-13 - PRAY Acronym Praise Repent Ask Yield - How To Pray Effectively

How Should We Pray? Learning from the Father, the Spirit, and the Word.

Once, the disciples came to Yeshua and said, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). They had watched him pray, and they wanted what he had. His answer is still the starting point for every believer today.

1. Begin with Relationship

Yeshua taught his disciples to say, “Father.” That one word changes everything. Prayer is not a formal request made to a distant ruler. It is a conversation between children and their Father. John 1:12 tells us that everyone who receives Yeshua becomes a child of God. Because we are his children, we can come to him with confidence and closeness.

2. Keep the Focus on the Kingdom

The Lord’s Prayer asks that God’s name be honored, that his kingdom come, and that his will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Our prayers should carry the same center: bringing God’s kingdom into our homes, our cities, and our world, with love, joy, peace, and justice.

3. Use Simple Words

A child does not address a loving father with long, formal titles. A child says “Papa” or “Abba.” God is almighty, but we do not have to use big words to reach him. Simple, honest prayer is welcome.

4. Ask, Seek, and Knock

Yeshua said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). Our Father delights to answer his children. Sometimes we ask for the wrong things, like a child asking for sweets. But a good father gives what is truly good for his children (Luke 11:11-13).

5. Ask First for the Holy Spirit

Yeshua said that if earthly parents know how to give good gifts, how much more will the Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13). The Spirit is the greatest gift we can receive, and he is the one who helps us pray rightly.

6. Pray for the Right Things

When we pray in the Spirit, our hearts begin to match God’s heart. Psalm 2:8 reminds us that God gives nations as an inheritance to his Son. Jesus came to seek and to save what was lost (Luke 19:10), so we too can pray for the lost to be found.

7. Knock at the Right Door

Yeshua stands at the door and knocks, and whoever opens it will be welcomed in (Revelation 3:20). In Luke 10, he sent his followers to look for a “person of peace,” a household that would open its door to the message. When we find such a house, we can turn it into a house of prayer for all nations (Mark 11:17).

8. Admit That We Do Not Know How to Pray

Romans 8:26-27 says that we do not know how we ought to pray, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Prayer is not a performance. We come with humility, and the Spirit helps us say what we cannot put into words.

9. Intercede for Four Things

With the Spirit’s help, we can pray for:

  1. The saints, the people who have given themselves wholly to God.
  2. Those in authority, as 1 Timothy 2:1-2 instructs.
  3. The peace of our city, as Jeremiah 29:7 commands the exiles in Babylon to seek the welfare of the city where they live.
  4. The healing of our land, as God promised in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If my people... humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”

10. Pray in Many Forms

Prayer is more than asking. Scripture shows many forms of prayer: asking and requesting, self-examination and confession, intercession for others, thanksgiving for what God has done, and quiet communion with the Father, as Jesus often did. Each form draws us closer to him.

11. Persist, Because God Hears

Revelation 8:3 describes the prayers of the saints rising before God. Psalm 126:5-6 reminds us that those who go out weeping, sowing seed in tears, will return with songs of joy. Keep praying, because the Father hears you and he is faithful.

12. Look Toward the Result

Our prayers point toward a glorious goal. Habakkuk 2:14 says the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. Revelation 11:15 announces that the kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign forever.

A Prayer to Begin With

Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us your Holy Spirit. Teach us to pray, forgive our sins, and lead us to the people who are waiting for your word. In the name of Yeshua, Amen.

Shalom,
