GOD APPOINTS RULERS
It is common for people to spew hatred against their leaders. It may be for race, religion, ideology or whatever. Even the media gets divided between likes and dislikes. But what is the biblical position for Christians to adhere to.
Throughout history, God appointed rulers, even
tyrants and dictators to work his purposes through them. Daniel told the
arrogant emperor Nebuchadnezzar, ”The
Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He will, and
sets up over it the lowest of men.” He
further told him, “You will be
driven away from mankind to live with the beasts of the field, and you will
feed on grass like cattle. And seven times will pass you by, until you
acknowledge that the Most High is ruler over the kingdom of men, and He gives
it to anyone He wishes.” (Daniel
4:17, 32).
We are not to criticize our leaders, “Don't even think about cursing the king; don't curse
the rich, not even in secret. A little bird might hear and tell everything.”
(Eccl. 10:20)
“Everyone
must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that
which is from God. Pay everyone what you owe him: taxes to whom taxes
are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor
to whom honor is due.
(Romans 13:1-7).
“First of all,
then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be
offered on behalf of all men; for kings and all those in authority, so that we may
lead peaceful
and quiet lives in all godliness and
dignity. This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior; who desires all men to be saved and to come to
the knowledge of the truth (Yeshua). (1Tim.
2:1-4).
At a time of global crisis like we are facing now,
rather than looking to government leaders to solve all the problems, we should
be looking up to the God who puts those leaders in place.
