उपवास / Fasting

सभी महान व्यक्तियों ने उपवास किया:

आरम्भ ही से भविष्यवक्ताओं और सन्तो ने उपवास को महत्वता दी है। मूसा चालीस दिन और रात निराहार रहा (निर्गमन 34ः 28)। दानिय्येल (दानिय्येल 10ः 2-3),नहेम्याह (नहेम्याह 9ः 1-2), दाऊद (भजनसंहिता 109ः 24), और महारानी एस्तेर (एस्तेर 4ः 13-16), आदि ने कष्ट के समय में उपवास और प्रार्थना किया।

उपवास के द्वारा सारा देश विनाश से बचा:

स्वयं राजा और नीनवे के एक लाख बीस हजार लोगों ने पशुओं समेत, उपवास किया, परिणाम स्वरूप परमेश्वर ने सारे देश को क्षमा कर दिया। (योना 4ः 11)

उपवास करो और जुंआ तोड़ो:

भविष्यवक्ता यशायाह के अनुसार यदि हम सांसारिक अभिलाषा के लिए उपवास करेंगे तो हमारी प्रार्थनाएं नहीं सुनी जाएंगी। परमेश्वर उस उपवास से प्रसन्न होता है जब हम अन्याय के बंधुओं और अंधेर सहने वालों की जंजीरो को तोड़ देते हैं। जब हम अनाथो को अपने घर में लाकर, नंगों को वस्त्र पहिनाते, और प्रभु के दासों से मुंह नहीं मोड़ते। तब प्रकाश हम पर चमकता है और चंगाई हमारे पास आती है। जब हम उसे पुकारते हैं तब प्रभु शीघ्रता से सुनता है। (यशायाह 58ः 3-12)

उपवास या भोज:

आज चर्च के अगुवे बड़े भोज के साथ नियुक्त होते हैं, जबकि नये नियम की कलीसिया में, प्राचीन उपवास से नियुक्त होते थे (प्रेरितों के काम 14ः 23)। अंताकिया की पूरी कलीसिया ने एक साथ उपवास और प्रार्थना किया, तब पवित्रात्मा ने पौलुस और बरनबास को मिशनरी बना कर भेजा (प्रेरितों के काम 13ः 1-3)। प्रेरित पौलुस बहुत अधिक उपवास करते थे (2 कुरिन्थियों 6ः 5) इस कारण उनकी सेवकाई बहुत फलदायक थी।

उपवास में समय और स्त्रोत सम्मिलित है:

अन्य जातियों के ईश्वरों के विपरीत हमारे परमेश्वर पर उपवास द्वारा कोई अवैध दबाव नहीं डाला जा सकता (निर्गमन 32ः 31-33)। कोई भी स्वार्थी सांसारिक आवश्यकताओं या केवल दूसरो को दिखाने हेतू उपवास नहीं करना चाहिये। परमेश्वर के निकट आने, उसकी इच्छा को जानने, और उसकी अभिलाषा को पूरी करने के लिए उपवास रखना चाहिये (जकर्याह 7ः 5)। अपने धन और समय तथा अपनी नींद का भी उपवास करिये।

भविष्यवक्ता यशायाह एक विश्वास योग्य चैकीदार के समान, यरूशलेम की दीवाल पर से अपने शहर को स्तुति योग्य बनाने के लिये निरंतर उपवास और प्रार्थना करता था। इसी प्रकार हमें तब तक उपवास और प्रार्थना करना चाहिये, जब तक कि हमारा शहर भी प्रार्थना और स्तुति का स्थान नहीं बन जाता। (यशायाह 62ः 6-7)

जब हम उपवास के साथ प्रार्थना यात्रा में जाते हैं तब पवित्र आत्मा हमें आत्मिक मल्लयुद्ध हेतु तैयार करता है। हम परमेश्वर को समर्पित होकर उसके निकट आते हैं (याकूब 4ः 7-8)। दुष्टात्माओं की पहिचान और योजनाएं प्रगट होती हैं और हम उनसे मल्लयुद्ध कर सकते हैं। (इफिसियों 6ः 12)

उपवास करिये और शैतान तेजी से भाग जाएगा:

प्रभु यीशु ने चालीस दिन उपवास किया। वह पवित्रात्मा से भरा था, फिर भी शैतान ने प्रभु पर आक्रमण किया (लूका 4ः 1, 14)। चाहे आप जाने या नहीं, और चाहे आप पसंद करे या नहीं, शैतान आपका विरोधी और दोष लगाने वाला है। वह पूरी तरह आपको नाश करने के लिए समर्पित हैं। उपवास और मध्यस्थता की प्रार्थना कवच के अभाव में अधिकांश मसीही घरानों और कलीसियाओं का उसने धज्जियां उड़ा दिया है जिसके कारण से शहर तथा पूरा देश नाश होता जा रहा है। यदि आप गम्भीरता से उसका सामना करना चाहते हैं तो उपवास एक प्रभावशाली हथियार है। तब ही बलवन्त बांधा जाएगा, उसका राज्य लूटा जाएगा, और परमेश्वर का राज्य आएगा (मत्ती 12ः 28-29)

प्रभु यीशु ने अपने चेलों को सिखाया कि कुछ दुष्ट आत्माए बिना उपवास और प्रार्थना के नहीं निकलती (मत्ती 17ः 21; मरकुस 9ः 29)। बिना दुष्टात्माओं को निकाले कलीसिया रोपण नहीं हो सकता (मत्ती 12ः 28-29)। स्त्री और पुरूष और बच्चों को भी दुष्टात्माओं को निकालना और बीमारी से चंगाई करना, हर एक विश्वासी की पहिचान और मूलभूत अधिकार है। इसके लिये हमें उपवास और प्रार्थना की आवश्यकता है। (मरकुस 16ः 17)

Fasting

All Great Men Fasted: From the very beginning the prophets and saints have given importance to fasting. Moses fasted without bread or water for forty days and nights and God gave him the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34: 28). Daniel (10: 2-3), Nehemiah (9: 1, 2), David (Psalm 109: 24) and Queen Esther fasted and prayed in times of trouble. (Esther 4: 13-16)

A Nation survives Holocaust by Fasting: One hundred and twenty thousand people of Nineveh, the king himself and all his subjects including the beasts fasted. Consequently the Lord forgave them. (Jonah 4: 11)

Fast and see Jesus Incarnate: The grand old prophetess Anna spent most of her life fasting and praying and was rewarded the privilege of holding baby Jesus in her arms (Luke 2: 36-38). The Pharisees complained to Jesus that his disciples do not fast, but Jesus assured them that the days would come when they will also fast.(Matthew 9: 14, 15)

Fast and Break Yokes: Prophet Isaiah teaches us that if we continue with worldly pursuits, while fasting, then our prayers will not be heard. God is pleased with such fasting, in which we loose the bonds of wickedness and break the yoke of the oppressed, when we bring the orphans to our homes and cover the naked with clothes and do not turn our faces from the servants of God. Then the light shines on us and healing comes to us. The Lord then hastens to listen to us when we call on him. (Isaiah 58: 3-12)

Fast or Feast: Today the leaders of the church are appointed with much feasting where as in the New Testament churches, the elders were appointed with much fasting. (Acts 14: 23) The entire Church of Antioch prayed and fasted together and the Holy Spirit chose Paul and Barnabas to be sent as missionaries (Acts 13: 1-3). Apostle Paul used to fast a lot (2 Corinthians) therefore his ministry was very fruitful.

Fasting Includes Time and Resources: No undue pressure can be put on God (Exodus 32: 31-33); therefore one should not fast for selfish worldly needs, or just to impress others. Fast is kept to come closer to God and to know His will and fulfill his desire. (Zechariah 7: 5). Fasting does not mean only giving up your food but also sharing your wealth, time and even giving up your sleep. God asked Israelites to humble themselves. David humbled himself with fasting and persistent prayer.(Psalm 35: 13)

The prophet Isaiah, like a faithful watchman kept fasting and praying over the walls of Jerusalem for his city to become praise on the earth. In the same way, we have to fast and pray till our city becomes a place of prayer and praise. (Isaiah 62: 6, 7)

When we go on a prayer journey while fasting, the Holy Spirit prepares us for spiritual warfare. We submit to God and come closer to Him (James 4: 7, 8). The identity and the activities of the evil spirits are revealed and we can then wrestle with them. (Ephesians 6: 12)

Fast and the Demons will Make a Fast Exit: Lord Jesus fasted for forty days. He was filled with Holy Spirit. He confronted Satan and demolished him (Luke 4: 1, 14). Whether you know it or not and whether you like it or not, Satan is your adversary and the accuser, who is fully committed to destroy you. If you want to seriously fight with him, then fasting is a very effective weapon. Only then the strongman will be bound, his kingdom will be plundered and the Kingdom of God will come. (Matthew 12: 28, 29)

The Lord Jesus taught His disciples that certain evil spirits do not go away except by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17: 21; Mark 9: 29). Without expelling the demons, the churches cannot be planted (Matthew 12: 28, 29). Regardless of age or sex, expelling demons and curing diseases are the fundamental rights and identity marks of every believer. For this we need to fast and pray. (Mark 16: 17)
