VISION
Paul says that he does not aimlessly box in the air
but is running a race to win the race. He does not want to be one of those
“also ran”. (1Cor. 9:26,27)
God told Habakkuk to write down the vision and run
with it so that everyone would know the vision that God had given him, “That
the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God as the waters
cover the sea.” (Habakkuk 2:1-3; 2:14)
Habakkuk, who was a farmer, responded, “Although the fig
tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the
labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock
shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the
stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is
my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make
me to walk upon mine high places. (Hab. 3:17-19)
During the New year many people make many resolutions
and set goals for the coming year. Some make physical goals that they will eat
less and do more exercises. Others make professional goals to learn more about
their profession by reading or watching YouTube videos or attending seminars.
Others make financial goals to rectify the mess they are in. Seventy percent of
the well-researched start-ups in the USA fail. The word “economy” comes from
the Greek word “oikos” which means the family. So, if you run your business
like you balance your family budget you will save many heart attacks. Yet
others make Spiritual goals that they will pray more, read the Bible more etc.
More of these New Year resolutions are soon forgotten and fail.
Jesus came with very clear goals, to do the will of
the Father. And the will of the Father is that “None should perish but come to
the knowledge of truth and be saved” (John 6:38; 2Pet. 3:9). He came preaching,
praying, teaching and demonstrating the Kingdom. (Luke 4:43; Matt. 6:10; Acts
1:3; Matt. 11:5). Finishing the task given to him was of such paramount
importance to him that even his food was to do the will of the Father (John 4:34).
Food time is the probably the best time for advancing the Kingdom. The
disciples made full use of it by breaking bread from house to house and the
Lord added to their numbers daily (Acts 2:46.47).
So, what should be our doable resolutions for the New
Year. Simply follow the model that our Master set for us. Pray for the laborers
for the harvest field (Luke 10:2); Find the person of peace and share the grub
and the gospel with them (Luke 10:5-9) and make them fishers of men (Matt.
4:19). If you follow this pattern, then all the other resolutions will fall in
line. Anything less would be half baked New Year resolution.
Shalom,
